چکیده

Simultaneous nitrification denitrification (SND) has been referred to as a biological process for nitrogen removal where nitrification and denitrification occur concurrently in the same aerobic reactor. SND facilities, investigated in this study, have been shown to remove 80 to 96 percent nitrogen without additional carbon and alkalinity. Carbon availability and bulk dissolved oxygen (DO) concentrations were found to be important process parameters for SND activity. Data suggest that a chemical oxygen demand to nitrogen (COD:N) ratio of at least 10.0 is required to achieve significant denitrification; and an optimum bulk DO concentration ranging from approximately 0.3 milligrams per liter (mg/L) to 0.7 mg/L appears to maximize SND activity. However, this low DO condition required for SND provides an environment more susceptible to sludge bulking as observed by the SVI data from the selected SND facilities in this study.

Simultaneous Nitrification and Denitrification Associated Phosphorus Uptake Properties of Sludge Subjected to EBPR with Efficient Micro Aeration

Simultaneous nitrification and denitrification (SND) under low dissolved oxygen (DO) and anaerobic/aerobic(anoxic) enhanced phosphorus removal (EBPR) are two processes that can significantly reduce the energy and carbon required for nutrient removal. The combination of the two processes is expected to achieve biological nutrient removal with minimal requirement of oxygen and carbon. In this stu...

Effect of Dissolved Oxygen and Chemical Oxygen Demand to Nitrogen Ratios on the Partial Nitrification/Denitrification Process in Moving bed Biofilm Reactors

Partial nitrification was reported to be technically feasible and economically favorable, especially for wastewaterwith high ammonium concentration or low C/N ratio. In this study, the effect of dissolved oxygen (DO)and influent ratio of chemical oxygen demand to nitrogen (COD/N) ratio on biological nitrogen removal fromsynthetic wastewater was investigated. Experiments were c...

Comparison of Simultaneous Nitrification and Denitrification for Three Different Reactors

Discharge of high NH4-N containing wastewater into water bodies has become a critical and serious issue due to its negative impact on water and environmental quality. In this research, the performance of three different reactors was assessed and compared with regard to the removal of NH4-N from wastewater. The highest nitrogen removal efficiency of 98.3% was found when the entrapped sludge reac...

Simultaneous nitrification-denitrification in a sequencing batch reactor equipped with fixed Kaldnes carriers

The main aim of this study was to evaluate the performance of a modified sequencing batch reactor (MSBR) using fixed Kaldnes carriers fed with acclimated sludge for ammonium removal via simultaneous nitrification-denitrification (SND) in synthetic wastewater. The results exhibited a SND of 82.3% within a 450-minute cycle time which was higher than that of a SBR without carrier (69.83%). Nitrite...

Mechanism for Simultaneous Nitrification/Denitrification

The operating characteristics of six full-scale wastewater treatment plants using the staged, closed loop bioreactor process known as orbal were evaluated to determine the degree of simultaneous biological nutrient removal (SBNR) occurring. Low effluent total nitrogen concentrations indicate that simultaneous nitrification and denitrification occurs reliably in these facilities. The use of SRT ...
